Many of us do not completely understand how thermal printers work. First of all, there are no movable parts in the thermal printers. It has only the thermal heads that provide the heat for melting the coating substances so that the reaction will take place and the printing will be done. There is also a roller that quietly draws in the thermal paper so that it will pass across the thermal heads. This explains why thermal printers do not make any noise when they are printing.
Ink printers have some movable parts which should move from one position to another before printing can take place. This is why ink printers make noise when they are printing. The noise comes from the movable parts. Therefore, if you want to maintain a calm working environment when you are printing, you should use thermal printers.
Thermal printers are easy to operate. Once you fill the printers with the thermal papers, you can print by just pressing the right button. Besides, most of the thermal printers are automated. For example, the ATM machines that use thermal printers have been automated that you do not need to do anything before your printout comes out. Once you are through with your transaction and then press yes if you want receipt, the printer will obey the command and issue you with a receipt.
Another important aspect of thermal printing that gives it an edge over ordinary printer is the quality of the printout. In thermal printing, there is nothing like lack of ink or too much ink, squeezing of papers or jamming of paper or the characters becoming blur. The printout is ever neat and legible in so far the printing head and the thermal papers are good. If you have seen printout done with thermal papers, you will realise that there is a great difference between it and the ones that are done with ordinary printer.
There are a number of applications that can only work with thermal printers. For example, point-at-sale machines and ATM machines works with thermal papers probably because of the absence of many parts and because of the size of the thermal papers that are used in them as well their mode of printing.
However, dot matrix printers have their own advantages over thermal printers. For example, the plain papers used for printing in them are more readily available than thermal papers and they are also less expensive. Secondly, though ink can be dangerous to health but as deadly as the chemicals and dye used in saturating the thermal papers. Thermal printing cannot be used for every type of printing. There are some printings that are better done with ink printers. So, thermal papers/printers cannot completely replace ordinary ink printers even though it may be more advantageous to use thermal paper especially for the running of business.
From the above, you can see that thermal printers are very useful in the doing of business today. This is why the use of thermal printers has continued to grow in popularity despite the fact that it is a recent invention.
