Thermal paper as the name suggest has to do with heat. The modern technology has made it possible for some papers to change colour when they are open to heat. These are called thermal papers. However, thermal papers do not just change color. There are some chemicals that are used to produce it that make it possible for them to change color when they are opened to heat.
When these papers are being manufactured the surface of the papers are mixed with dye and any other suitable acid. There are some chemical reactions that take place between the dye and the acid when the thermal paper is heated up to the melting point of the acidic compound. The dye reacts with the acid thus causing the paper to change color. At the cooling of the paper, the new form of the paper is preserved in metastable form.
There are some thermal papers with coatings that turn to black when they are heated as described above. There are also other coatings that change to red or blue when the above reaction takes place upon the heating of the thermal papers. Such thermal papers with coatings that turn to red or blue when heated are popularly used than the former. Thermal paper can even change colour at the scratch of the fingernail upon them. The heat generated as a result of friction is strong enough to cause the reaction that gives rise to color change.
Thermal papers are popular nowadays due to the fact that they are used on daily basis in some machines that are of great important to man. Such machines as adding machines, thermal printers, cash register devices and credit card devices use thermal papers.
Thermal image produced with this process can easily fade if it is not well protected. To avoid the fading of thermal paper, some special protective top coatings are used. The same protective top coating also ensures that residues on the thermal print heads from the thermal coating are eliminated or reduced to the minimum.

Such machines as fax machine, ATM that is automated teller machine, some brands of printers also make use of thermal papers. In our world where lottery plays important role as a means of generating income either for a group or for the entire nation, thermal is employed in the generation of lottery tickets. There is no need to have any fear about the possibility of the paper reacting with the skin oil. Improvement has been made in that regard to forestall such occurrence.
The durability of thermal paper when it comes to keeping record has been doubted by many people. Indeed, thermal has not got long durability. Though there is improvement in that regard, but it is not the most efficient with regard to keeping record. This is because exposure to heat can change the colour of the surface making the printing to be blurred.
